CSA Celebrates Jazz with Jamey Aebersold

FEBRUARY 6, 2010: Community School of the Arts today presented jazz
education icon Jamey Aebersold in a free workshop at Spirit Square.

Thanks to a special grant from the Arts and Science Council, Community
School of the Arts flew Mr. Aebersold from his home outside Louisville
to Charlotte to teach CSA students, faculty and friends for three hours
this morning.

Jamey is the legendary creator of the Play-A-Long series of records,
CDs and books, which have taught generations of jazz musicians to practice
and improvise with confidence. Now in its 127th edition, the series underscores
Jamey's belief that improvisation is something that all people can do.

During today's workshop, Jamey (a 1989 inductee into the International Association
of Jazz Educators Hall of Fame) performed with a rhythm section of professional
musicians who are friends and faculty of the School: Ocie Davis (drums), Steve
Gordon (piano) and Elisa Pruett (bass). He taught theory and improvisation, working
with CSA students individually and in small groups. Students included Charles Basse
on saxophone, Daniel Kane on trombone, Lydia Tran on piano, Avery McGuirt on
violin and CPCC student Jes Seda on guitar.

After the workshop, all participants enjoyed a free pizza lunch in the Spirit Square
lobby, thanks to the generosity of Fuel Pizza and Life Enrichment Network.

The workshop also launched the registration drive for Community School of the Arts'
2010 Jazz Summer Camp, scheduled for July 19-23 and open to students in grades
7 through 12, rising.
