MISSION
Our mission is to
provide quality arts experiences that enrich lives, cultivate imagination
and foster the development of healthy communities.
ARTS LEARNING MAKES A
DIFFERENCE
At Community School of
the Arts, our faculty and staff are passionate about arts education. We're
dedicated to bringing the arts to everyone because we see the benefits every
day.
Academic Performance
Arts learning improves academic performance --- particularly in reading,
language and math --- and raises scores on standardized tests. A 2005
national research study showed that five years of arts education raised SAT
verbal scores by 49 points and SAT math scores by 38 points. Educators see
a direct correlation between arts participation and academic proficiency,
and arts students develop more sophisticated reading and writing skills. A
study of high school seniors found that those who were involved in band and
orchestra throughout middle school and high school were more than twice as
likely to perform at the highest levels in math as their peers who were not
involved in music.
Social and Emotional
Skills
Studies also show that the social and cognitive skills required for arts
participation are essential to success in life. Student participants
strengthen their reasoning and problem solving skills and improve their
creative thinking abilities. Arts students are more likely to participate
in community service and interact productively with contemporaries. They
are also more tolerant of differences. Arts learning builds confidence!
Students encounter new challenges, work diligently toward a goal, and
experience the joy of success, frequently as part of an interdependent team.
