PNC Grow Up Great
Growing Up Great with Discovery Place and Bethlehem Center
In 2013, CSA was awarded a more than $200,000 grant from PNC to partner with Discovery Place and Bethlehem Center to launch a two-year pilot program creating a new national model for integrating science and visual art into the pre-K curriculum.
These three respected Charlotte institutions formed a unique partnership to change the preschool experience for 850 children at Bethlehem Center’s eight Head Start locations. The program’s strategic goals will focus on teachers, students and families and on creating sustainable change in the educational process. Teachers will become proficient in the design of integrated classroom activities, build confidence in teaching arts and science, and increase their arts and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) content knowledge. Students will engage in inquiry-based learning, and their reasoning skills—which have been in decline—will demonstrably improve. Families will be an integral part of the new educational process, creating a community of ‘learning households’ that routinely integrate arts and science into the home.
To accomplish these goals, CSA’s Early Childhood Arts Specialist and Discovery Place’s Early Childhood Science Specialist go into Bethlehem Center classrooms, working together with Bethlehem Center teachers to create lesson plans that integrate arts and sciences into the preschool curriculum. In addition, all preschoolers involved in the program visit CSA’s Preschool Arts Lab each year.
